Airline Excess Baggage Charges

In general, when the Free Baggage Allowance is exceeded, excess baggage charges will apply.

Under the Weight Concept, the fine or penalty is based on the amount of weight by which the baggage exceeds the Free Baggage Allowance and charged per kilogram (kgs) or pound (lb). The rate of charge is generally 1.5 % of the highest published one way adult Economy Fare for the proposed journey per kilogram (kgs) or per pound (lb) of excess weight. Variations of this rate are not uncommon - some airlines use the Business Fare as the basis for the charge.

Under the Piece Concept, the fine or penalty is based on the number of pieces of baggage in excess of the Free Baggage Allowance as well as the size and weight of the pieces. The charge is generally per piece (wide variations between airlines) and is sometimes based on the final destination.

Note: Always check with your airline well before you travel to find out the latest excess baggage charges because as stated some airlines reserve the right to change their baggage rules without prior notice.

Examples of Excess Baggage Charge Calculations:

WEIGHT CONCEPT

If the Free Baggage Allowance is 40kgs and the baggage checked in weighs 48kgs, then the excess baggage charge will be based on 8kgs (ie. 48kgs £ 40kgs). If the highest published one way Economy Fare for the proposed journey is say GBP £500 then the excess charge will be GBP £60*.

1.5% x GBP £500 = GBP £7.5 per kg x 8kgs = GBP £60* (Approx USD $100)

* Tax may be added in some countries.

PIECE CONCEPT

If the Free Baggage Allowance is 2 pieces and the baggage checked in comprises 5 pieces, the excess charge will be based on 3 pieces (ie, 5pcs £ 2pcs). If the rate of charge is say GBP £25 for the first excess piece and GBP £50 per piece for any additional excess pieces, then the excess charge will be GBP £125*.

1st piece excess charge

GBP  £ 25*

2nd piece excess charge

GBP  £ 50*

3rd piece excess charge

GBP  £ 50*

Total excess charge

GBP £125*

(Approx USD $200)

* Tax may be added in some countries.

Sometimes these fines or penalties will be COMBINED AND EVEN MULTIPLIED where the baggage exceeds the Free Baggage Allowance in terms of number of pieces, size and weight.
